Did you know that the Obon festival is one of the most important traditions in Japan? It's a Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors, where it is believed that the spirits of ancestors return to visit their families. Obon usually takes place during mid-August and is a time for family reunions, where many Japanese return to their hometowns.
The festival is celebrated with dances known as Bon Odori, accompanied by traditional music and wearing of yukatas, which are light summer kimonos. Lanterns are hung outside houses to guide the spirits, and at the end of the festival, floating lanterns are put into rivers, lakes, and seas to guide the spirits back to their world.
The festival not only honors the spirits of ancestors but also serves as an occasion for families to spend time together, making it a heartfelt celebration across Japan.
